The Internet: A Clear and Present Danger?

In this article, Cathleen A Cleaver points out the dangers faced by people on the Internet. The main danger in this article is pornogrophy. The author then goes on to explain the situation between today's children and pornogrophy.

If children are searching for something and do not know how to do so correctly, they might end up on a website that can “mess them up.” I myself sometimes ended up on a website with some disturbing pictures when I was still learning about the Internet.

  1. This article was interesting. I have also come across inapropriate websites when i was very young. Its amazing what things can be available to anyone online these days. You would think by now we would have come up with some kind of plan to prevent children from coming across pronography websites. I do know they have programs such as "nannies" that prevent them from going onto websites not approved by parents, but even then, not many children have these programs on their computers.

  2. Adolescents nowadays are the majority of people to be using computers, so it is scary to think about all the inappropriate websites that are available to them. Society would be better off if the government provided tighter security and restrictions on the web, so that children can be safer on the Internet. The Internet is a massive medium of information that is stored and distributed throughout, therefore, more safety precautions should be taken.

  3. very true, you can type in searches for the word orange and a pornographic site will show up on your screen. The internet is a very dangerous place for children and i believe the internet should be monitored by parents and some websites should be blocked. My parents never really understood anything about the internet but they had bought me a computer for school. Parents should be more aware of the dangers of chat rooms.

  4. I would say the first step is for parents to be well versed in the internet, then comes guiding the young children. Many "bad" websites are easy to access and parental controls do not always work. Teaching them about the internet should be like teaching them about the "real world." It is also important for them to learn from their mistakes. A child is a child and they need constant attention, parents should not slack off or spoil their kids.

  5. I completely agree, it's sad to know what the world is turning into and how today kids are maturing way faster than we did because of the internet and what is beong shown very easily on it. As Gavin stated the parents should know how to work the internet, then they can help the children.
